MongoDB integration for Rig
The easiest way to query MongoDB in Claude and other AI tools
MongoDB is a document database, available self-hosted or as the managed MongoDB Atlas service, that stores records as JSON-like documents in collections.
What Rig sees in MongoDB
Once connected, Rig models these objects so questions resolve to the right tables and joins:
- One table per collection
- Child tables for nested arrays
- The collections you choose
How MongoDB connects to Rig
Rig Ingest connects with a read-only connection string over TLS, reads from a secondary when one exists, and mirrors your collections into your warehouse on a schedule. Collections with an updated-at field sync edits as well as new documents.

Product data in MongoDB is hard to analyse with SQL tools. Rig mirrors each collection into a table in your warehouse, so analysts query a copy and the application database is left alone.
- How many documents are in each collection?
- Which records were created or changed this week?
- Show new users per day for the last 30 days
Flatten nested documents into queryable tables
Documents often hold arrays of sub-records. Rig lands nested arrays as child tables, so a question about line items or events does not need custom parsing.
- Which collections have nested arrays, and what do the child tables hold?
- Join an order table to its line-item child table
- Count child rows per parent document
Join application data to CRM and billing
A MongoDB user or account collection usually shares a key with your CRM and billing systems. With all of them in one warehouse, you can connect product behaviour to commercial records.
- Which customers in our CRM also appear in the application database?
- Compare signups in the app with new accounts in billing
- Show product records for accounts that churned
Ask your MongoDB data in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor
Rig serves your MongoDB data to AI assistants over MCP. Once MongoDB is synced into your warehouse, you can ask questions in plain English from the tool you already use, and every answer is backed by validated, governed SQL.
Frequently asked questions
- What does Rig need to connect to MongoDB?
- A connection string for a read-only user, and the database name. On Atlas, add Rig's IP address under Network Access first.
- Can I limit which collections sync?
- Yes. List collection names in the Collections field. For a hard boundary, scope the MongoDB user's role as well.
- Does a sync put load on my primary?
- Reads go to a secondary when one exists, unless your connection string sets a read preference.
- Is the connection encrypted?
- Yes. TLS is on for Atlas and by default for other servers, and certificate checks cannot be turned off.
