Connect Google Sheets to Rig

Rig turns each tab of a Google Sheet into its own warehouse table, so budgets, targets and mappings kept in spreadsheets can be joined to the rest of your data. Rig offers two cards: Google Sheets (OAuth) for one spreadsheet you sign in to, and Google Sheets (Service Account) for everything shared with a service account.

    Before you start

    • Pick a card. Google Sheets (OAuth) syncs one spreadsheet, using your Google sign-in. Google Sheets (Service Account) syncs every spreadsheet you share with it, which suits unattended syncing.
    • Row 1 of each tab becomes the column names, so make sure each tab has a header row.

Step 1: Share your spreadsheets (service account card only)

Skip this step for the OAuth card.

    1. In Google Sheets, open the spreadsheet and click Share.
    2. Add the service account email Rig shows you and choose Viewer.
    3. Sharing a Drive folder works too, and every sheet inside it is picked up. Sheets you share later sync automatically.

Step 2: Connect it in Rig

Adding a source needs a workspace owner, or a role with the Manage connections permission, on a workspace where you manage your own connections. If the Connectors tab says “Data ingestion for this workspace is managed by Rig”, ask an owner or Rig support to add the source.

    1. In Rig, open Connections and search for Google Sheets.
    2. For one spreadsheet with your own sign-in, choose Google Sheets (OAuth), approve access with Google, and enter the sheet in Spreadsheet ID. Paste the sheet's URL or just the ID from docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/<ID>/edit.
    3. For everything you have shared, choose Google Sheets (Service Account) and paste the full key into Service account JSON key.
    4. On the service account card, leave Spreadsheet ID (optional - pins ONE spreadsheet) blank to sync every shared spreadsheet, or paste one sheet's URL or ID to pin that spreadsheet only.
    5. Use Tabs to ingest (comma-separated, optional) to list tab names exactly as they appear. Leave it blank to ingest every tab. On the service account card this works only with a pinned spreadsheet.
    6. Choose Cell values. Leave it on As displayed to keep the text the sheet shows, such as £400.00 and 25%. Choose Underlying values for raw values such as 400 and 0.25.
    7. Save the connection.

    What Rig pulls in

Google Sheets lands in its own google_sheets schema in your warehouse:

    • One table per tab: Each tab becomes a table. In the service account card's scan mode the table name combines the spreadsheet and tab names.

The tables come from your own spreadsheets, so Rig cannot list them in advance. Every column lands as text.

    Good to know

    • You can change Cell values on an existing connection. The next sync reloads each tab in the new form.
    • Dates stay readable in the sheet's own date format under both settings.
    • A pinned spreadsheet can also be an Excel file (.xlsx) stored in Drive.
    • Keep dashboard and formula tabs out of the sync by listing only the tabs you want.
    • To disconnect Google Sheets, click the bin icon on the source's row under Sources & actions. Only whoever connected the source or a workspace owner can do this, and data already synced stays in the warehouse.

    What people use this for
