Connect Crunchbase to Rig

Connect Crunchbase to Rig with the API key from your Crunchbase data licence. Today the connector syncs organisation autocomplete records, which gives you a reference list of companies to join to your own accounts.

    Before you start

    • You need a Crunchbase API key. Crunchbase notes that most endpoints need an Enterprise tier, so check your licence covers the data you want.
    • Know who at your company manages the Crunchbase licence. They can issue or share the key.

Step 1: Get your Crunchbase API key

Crunchbase issues API keys with its data licences, and its public documentation does not list a menu path for them.

    1. Ask the owner of your Crunchbase licence for the API key, or find it in the account area of your Crunchbase data licence.
    2. Check the key works by making a call to the Crunchbase API with it as the user_key. Crunchbase's documentation shows the format.
    3. Copy the key.

Step 2: Connect it in Rig

Adding a source needs a workspace owner, or a role with the Manage connections permission, on a workspace where you manage your own connections. If the Connectors tab says “Data ingestion for this workspace is managed by Rig”, ask an owner or Rig support to add the source.

    1. In Rig, open Connections, choose the Connectors tab and go to Sources & actions.
    2. Search for Crunchbase, open the card and click Connect.
    3. Crunchbase API key: paste your key.
    4. Click Continue. Rig checks the credentials and lists the streams it can reach, so choose the ones you want and click Connect.
    5. The source then syncs on its schedule, which is nightly unless you change it. To load data straight away, click Sync on its row; Test pulls a small sample first if you want to check the connection.

    What Rig pulls in

Crunchbase lands in its own crunchbase schema in your warehouse:

    • Organisations: organisation autocomplete records, which you can use as a lookup of company names.

The connector's base setup only pulls this one stream. Funding rounds, people and acquisitions are not part of it today.

    Good to know

    • Crunchbase sends the key as a user_key parameter on each request, so treat the key like a password.
    • What your key can read depends on your Crunchbase licence. Some endpoints answer with an error on lower tiers.
    • To disconnect Crunchbase, click the bin icon on the source's row under Sources & actions. Only whoever connected the source or a workspace owner can do this, and data already synced stays in the warehouse.

    What people use this for

    • Match accounts to Crunchbase organisations
    • Spot gaps and duplicates in your account data
