# BigQuery shared datasets integration for Rig

## The easiest way to query BigQuery shared datasets in Claude and other AI tools

A shared BigQuery dataset is a set of tables in someone else's Google Cloud project that they have granted you read access to, which is how many vendors publish customer data.

[Try Rig](https://app.rig.so/signup)[Book a demo](https://rig.so/book-demo)

## What Rig sees in BigQuery shared datasets

Once connected, Rig models these objects so questions resolve to the right tables and joins:

- Every table in the shared dataset
- Date-sharded tables combined into one
- Tables named individually when only some are shared

## How BigQuery shared datasets connects to Rig

You share the dataset with a Rig service account as BigQuery Data Viewer, and Rig Ingest mirrors its tables into your warehouse on a schedule. There is no OAuth screen, export bucket or key to rotate unless you choose to use your own service account.

## Bring vendor-published data into your warehouse

Some vendors deliver your data as a BigQuery dataset instead of through an API. Rig mirrors those tables, so the vendor's data sits next to your CRM and billing sources and can be joined to them.

Ask Rig

- What tables did the vendor share, and how many rows does each hold?
- Join the vendor's customer table to our CRM accounts
- Which records changed since the last sync?

## Query a GA4 BigQuery export alongside business data

The GA4 BigQuery export writes one events table per day. Rig combines date-sharded families such as \`events\_YYYYMMDD\` into one table with a \`\_shard\_date\` column, so you query a single table across days.

Ask Rig

- How many events did we record per day this month?
- Show events by shard date for the last two weeks
- Compare daily event counts with daily orders

## Mirror only the tables you were given

Providers sometimes share a few individual tables and leave the rest of the dataset out. You list them in the Tables field, and Rig reads those and nothing else.

Ask Rig

- Which tables are mirrored from this dataset?
- How current is each mirrored table?
- Which tables have the most rows?

## Ask your BigQuery shared datasets data in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor

Rig serves your BigQuery shared datasets data to AI assistants over MCP. Once BigQuery shared datasets is synced into your warehouse, you can ask questions in plain English from the tool you already use, and every answer is backed by validated, governed SQL.

## Frequently asked questions

What BigQuery access does Rig need?

The BigQuery Data Viewer role on the dataset, granted to a Rig service account or to your own. Viewer access lets it read and list tables.

Does this cost me BigQuery query charges?

Full loads read rows directly and bill nothing. Only incremental updates run a query, and those bill to the billing project you set, which defaults to the service account's own project.

Can I mirror a dataset someone else owns?

Yes, that is the purpose. Enter the owner's project ID and the dataset name, and have them share the dataset with the Rig service account.

Is this the same as Rig's BigQuery warehouse connection?

No. This connector copies a shared dataset into your warehouse. The warehouse connection is where Rig runs its own queries.
