# Connect Mailchimp to Rig

Sync your Mailchimp audiences, campaigns, automations, templates and campaign reports into Rig, so your AI tools can read email performance beside sales. Mailchimp connects with an API key plus the datacenter prefix at the end of that key.

## Before you start

- You need Manager permissions in Mailchimp. Mailchimp lets users with that level generate their own API keys.

## Step 1: Create a Mailchimp API key

1. Click your profile icon and choose **Profile**.
2. Open the **Extras** menu and choose **API keys**.
3. In the Your API Keys section, click `Create A Key`.
4. Name the key after Rig, so you know what uses it, then click `Generate Key`.
5. Click `Copy Key to Clipboard` and save the key somewhere safe. Mailchimp will not show it again.
6. Click `Done`.

The datacenter prefix is in the key
The end of your key is the datacenter prefix, such as `us10` or `us19`. In the key `abc123def-us10` the prefix is `us10`. Rig needs it separately because it forms the address of the Mailchimp API.

## Step 2: Connect it in Rig

New to Rig? Watch how to find Connections

Adding a source needs a workspace owner, or a role with the Manage connections permission, on a workspace where you manage your own connections. If the Connectors tab says “Data ingestion for this workspace is managed by Rig”, ask an owner or Rig support to add the source.

1. In Rig, open `Connections`, choose the `Connectors` tab and go to `Sources & actions`.
2. Search for **Mailchimp**, open the card and click `Connect`.
3. **Mailchimp API key**: the full key from Step 1.
4. **Datacenter prefix**: the part after the dash, for example `us10`.
5. Click `Continue`. Rig checks the credentials and lists the streams it can reach, so choose the ones you want and click `Connect`.
6. The source then syncs on its schedule, which is nightly unless you change it. To load data straight away, click `Sync` on its row; `Test` pulls a small sample first if you want to check the connection.

## What Rig pulls in

Mailchimp lands in its own `mailchimp` schema in your warehouse:

- **Lists**: your audiences.
- **Campaigns**: your email campaigns.
- **Automations**: your automation workflows.
- **Templates**: your email templates.
- **Reports**: campaign performance reports.

## Good to know

- Mailchimp shows only the key's name and its first four characters after creation. If you lose the key, generate a new one and update Rig.
- A Mailchimp key works without a password, so anyone holding it can use the API. Treat it like a password.
- Rig reads audiences as lists and does not pull their individual members.
- To disconnect Mailchimp, click the bin icon on the source's row under `Sources & actions`. Only whoever connected the source or a workspace owner can do this, and data already synced stays in the warehouse.

## What people use this for

- Report on campaign performance
- Track audience growth
- Compare automations and templates
- Monitor deliverability
